Instead of just having the option of matching by group, I would LOVE to have the option of people being able to match up by other commonalities, such as tags they self-select for their profile, a location tag, events they attended, etc. This would be HUGE for my community, with members who are more likely to interact one-on-one with people they have something in common with.

This could be done with groups. You could create an unjoinable group called "matchmaking" & joinable subgroups for each commonality/topic. Matchups now allows you to create matchmaking pools where people within the pool are matched together. So the flow for your members would essentially be to join a matchmaking group, then opt into matchmaking. You could make a doc or post instructing them to do that.
