SIMPLE Onboarding - CUT the Friction!
Ryn Sloane
We're losing new members in the onboarding process, and it's a huge problem. People are dropping off after entering their email, even with all the instructions and follow-up emails (AND abandoned link workflow active).
The current multi-step process is too cumbersome.
We need a simple, single-step solution. Can we change the flow so a new member only needs to enter their email to join? All other profile information, including the onboarding questions, can be requested later via an email invitation. This will drastically reduce friction and get more people into the community.

Our primary goal should be to reduce friction in the process of purchasing and consuming content. This is a critical factor for the success and growth of any online community or course. With this in mind, I'd like to propose a more streamlined approach to user onboarding and profile management.
Firstly, simplifying the sign-up process is essential. I suggest enabling one-click registration using just the user's email address. Once inside the platform, users can have the flexibility to edit their profiles, including adding a picture, name, email, country, etc., and choose which information to display publicly.
Regarding user profiles images, an efficient solution would be to use AI-generated images, such as those created by Dall-E. We could either use Dall-E dynamically or you could create a batch of 1000 avatars in advance to be assigned randomly to new users. Similarly, for user names, instead of using their emails, a random assignment or AI-generated names could be a practical approach, until the user decide to change it or not.
It's important to note that, based on feedback from my community of over 1000 members, the current onboarding process is often perceived as cumbersome, with a significant portion of the data provided being non-authentic. This indicates that the detailed onboarding does not add substantial value to the user experience.
Additionally, I recommend revising the login process. The current method of logging in via an email link can be inconvenient, especially for users who do not frequently access their emails or use multiple browsers. A more direct login method could enhance user convenience and reduce barriers to engagement.
In conclusion, by focusing on a more user-friendly onboarding experience and eliminating unnecessary steps, we can significantly enhance user engagement and satisfaction. I look forward to your thoughts on these suggestions and am eager to contribute further to the enhancement of our platform.

Yes I also lost a lot of people when doing an online challenge, and I only found out after when looking through the people.... :/

This is happening for us too where people get through the onboarding process and don't complete it. Which requires me to spend several emails following up with them to finish the onboarding process (after they've already started payment). We need the option to have their email and payment info only (plus maybe the chance to agree to Terms and Conditions of the community) and they're in. The onboarding stuff can come later via the email invitation.

The problem I noticed when I was testing out Heartbeat was it took my 2 testers literally 10-15 minutes of the beating heart image going after clicking on the invite link before they were able to actually sign up. I’m hoping this has been sorted out since I was testing a year ago, but it’s one of the main reasons I didn’t use Heartbeat even though I love most things about them. I’m keeping an eye on how things seem to be working for users because I’d love to eventually use Heartbeat if it seems like issues like this are resolved.

We experience the same, this would be so helpful! I'd also love to see more question options than just open text eg. checkboxes

Also the mobile app download adds so much friction... can there not be a mobile browser version?

Very true, maybe make custom onboarding steps or maybe tutorial step by step with modal who guide new member ?

I'm not sure which are the exact pain points Ryn Sloane and the others are experiencing. I would be very interested to understand better, so please share why the current possibilities are not what you need?
I at least can reduce the onboarding process by removing all the questions and just have them enter email and name and that is it if I want to. Doesn't go much more simple than that.
My pain point is that the onboarding is so dull and hardly customizable.
It would be nice to have more flexibility to curate a different flow. For example I can have them sign up and only afterwards ask the questions to further build their profile.
I would love to be able to add more personalized text to the different parts of the signup.
E.g.: "Welcome {username}! Awesome to have you with us.
For the community to better connect with you consider filling out the following questions. No worries, you can add and edit this information anytime. Feel free to skip this part."
Also the ability to embed other things than a video ( that must be a Youtube, Vimeo, or Loom link. I use other video hosts. Recently got Dadan and really like it as a Loom alternative.)
What do you think?
If it's something others here like too I open another feature request.

YES!!
And I'll add to this (and create a separate feature request for) that I would like to be able to direct members to a welcome page after they sign up. The only page we can direct them to is the "Code of Conduct", which I've now added a sort of welcome text and instructions to, but it's not great because the title of the page cannot be changed to anything else....
