I initially wanted to create an onboarding question sorting people into interest groups so I created a parent group of ‘Interests’ for a load of sub-groups because you had to have a parent group to link to the onboarding question.
This worked fine, however, I also wanted my members to be able to pick and choose/join and leave their interest groups whenever they wanted, and be able to explore what other interest groups were available.
Pulse was really helpful in advising that I could basically only do either;
have a parent group and let people choose in onboarding but never change, or
use groups without parent to show under Account > My Groups for people to explore and join/leave whenever
I chose option 2 as it’s more flexible but I had to add a note in the Welcome DM to tell people where to find My Groups. I think not everyone reads those DMs potentially so I’m intrigued to see how many questions I get about this.
A neat solution would be to allow the sub-groups of a parent group to be shown under My groups so that users can both a) enter groups in onboarding AND b) join/leave groups as they please via My Groups.
Many thanks,
Anja
